GPS and Mapping

GPS and Mapping technology has been widely adopted into Transport and Logistics over the last 5 - 10 years however many companies have not achieved the benefits they anticipated.

Whilst GPS and Mapping technology is providing operatiors with visibility of fleet locations and driver behaviour, many of the anticipated benefits can only be realised when this data is integrated to the Operations Systems.

TransLogix has integrated GPS and Mapping capability into the Transport Management Solution to combine GPS locations and Maps with operational information like customers, jobs, drivers, trip plans and so on to provide a powerful user experience. By combining this data in a single user interface, operators are able to view current vehicle locations and:

  • The planned route
  • Drop off and pick up locations enroute
  • User defined consignment and manifest details

The GPS data can then be used by the Transport Management System to process operational tasks, trigger alerts and activities in real time. This enables reporting and analysis of planned versus actual, ad hoc queries such as finding the closest vehicle that has capacity to collect a consignment.

Geo Fencing

A major benefit of having the mapping and GPS integrated to the Transport Management Solution is the ability to close the gap between location and operations.

  • As the Transport Management System (TMS) knows the GPS position of an address and its geo-radius, it knows whether a vehicle is within the geofence. Coupled with the TMS knowledge of the actual operational job the vehicle has been allocated, the TMS knows whether the vehicle is at a collect or deliver point.
  • In and Out of collect and Delivery can be calculated automatically.
  • If two geo-radius cross, comparing the operational job the vehicle is doing will determine which address the vehicle is at.
  • The system will not confuse a position being crossed by a vehicle (eg: a road) as a vehicle crossing the geo radius will be compared with the operational job.
  • The system enables "actions" to be automatically triggered when crossing a valid geo fence, such as SMS or email notification, invoice print and so on.

Hardware Options

TransLogix has taken a two pronged approach to solving this solution;

  • TransLogix mobility solution running on any handheld PDA with GPS tracking that supports Microsoft operating systems
  • Integration with the major 3rd Party GPS tracking providers which can be fixed in cab or hand held

The benefit of this approach is that TransLogix has a solution for most existing GPS and Mobility devices, and that Transport and Logistics companies who have already invested heavily in GPS units can still gain the benefits of integration into the operational environment. New vehicles or dedicated subcontractors may benefit from a handheld solution supporting sign on glass functionality.
